Trashed Ambulance are a skate punk band based in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada.
They consist of;
Josh Hauta – Vocals/Guitar
Shawn Taggart – Bass
1) Who are your top 3 influences?
- Face to Face
- Modest Mouse chord progressions
2) How did you get your band name?
A game of mad libs gone horribly awry!
3) How did you meet?
The band has gone through a lot of changes in it’s almost 5 years of existence
but Josh (guitar/vocals) and Shawn (bass) met long ago when they were in
different bands called Chimp Change and Booze Cruise. Then Shawn moved to
Red Deer and we started a band called Loser Points. Shawn still plays in that
band but joined Trashed Ambulance before the release of our EP – A Dime For
4) What is your songwriting process?
We usually just add new lyrics to a Face to Face song but when we’re feeling
really ambitious, Josh will make a cheesy demo in his basement and let the other
guys add their flavour.
Shawn has contributed a couple songs now, as we don’t
care who writes them as long as they are fun to play.
5) Plans for a year from now?
We are about to release a new EP that we are super stoked on! We have a mini
Alberta 3-day jaunt in May and hope to play as much as possible after that. We
are currently going through a personnel change as our drummer moved to BC,
so we hope to have that sorted out soon. Then it’ll be game on!
6) First gig experience?
Josh’s first gig was his high school band where they played 3 songs at a
Christmas party in front of a capacity crowed. He looked like a huge dork and still
carries on that tradition today.
Trashed Ambulance did a tour last Spring where we visited Quebec and
Ontario. Against all odds, our guitars and livers survived and we still keep
annoying people today with our snotty skate punk sound.
7) Biggest challenge so far?
The biggest challenge has been two of our members being college students so
availability and funds have been low. We are both proud grads now though so
will have more time for this punk rock stuff!
8) Your dream tour to star on?
A brewery tour of the world would be Heaven. Yeah, we like beer…
9) Favourite thing about performing?
We love getting to hang out with our friends from other bands and every now and
then people sing along to our songs and that is pretty alright. As a counterpoint, it
is not overly fun taking a mic to the teeth. Solid 2/10 tops.
10) Favourite song to play live?
We like to play our song Mulligan because there’s ‘Hey’s’ and people seem to
catch on and sing it with us. We also like playing Ambulance because it’s kind of
our theme song.
11) What inspired your most recent songs?
Actually, our latest EP contains songs that we wrote for people who donated
money to us for our tour last year. They gave us a topic and we wrote them a
song about it. We cover such important topics like Pavel Bure and ex-wives.
They turned out way better than we thought, so stay tuned!
12) What do you do when you’re not musically involved?
As I said, two of us were students and while we studied, we worked at bars and
beer stores. Josh also writes for a punk blog and hosts a podcast where he
interviews bands and makes a buffoon out of himself.
13) What gear do you use?
Josh has a Les Paul Traditional with Ernie Ball Super Slinkys and a Marshall
Shawn has a Fender P-Bass with Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder Pickups
and .45-.105 Ernie Ball Strings. He uses .6- in tune gp picks and plays through a
Fender Bassman 800. #sponsorhimFender
14) In your opinion, what’s your best song?
‘Metronome’ seems to be the song that resonates with people the most so far but
we are really stoked on the new songs, especially one called Open Road.
15) Who has the worst dress sense?
Shawn’s been wearing the same Muhammed Ali hoodie since I’ve met him, so
maybe he can get a new one eventually. None of us really dress our age though.
16) Pizza! What do you have?
Josh quit eating meat last year so it’s veggie all day. Shawn, however, does not
discriminate against pizza of any colour, class, or creed.
17) Who has the worst tattoo?
We don’t have tattoos somehow, but Josh almost got one of Speedy Gonzalez
smoking a joint in high school. Talk about an opportunity missed…
18) Most annoying member?
We got rid of those guys. We are all a delight to be around now!
