Say What You Will are a quartet band from New Haven, Connecticut, USA! Their members are;
- Ethan (Vocals)
- Shane (Guitar)
- Christine (Bass)
- Chuck (Drums)
1) Who are your top 3 influences?
Our influences tend to change as we grow in our writing style, but we would definitely have to say;
- State Champs
- Like Pacific
- Sleep On It
2) How did you get your band name?
Our band name came from a line in the song “Fences” by Knuckle Puck – “Say what you will, but I never asked anything of you…”
3) How did you all meet?
Originally, Shane (guitar) and Christine (bass) were in another band with our original drummer. Once that band split up we started ‘Say What You Will’ in 2016 and added Ethan (singer) who we knew through mutual friends. As the band developed we found Chuck (drummer) through another mutual friend.
4) What is your writing process?
Usually Ethan will write a song acoustically and send it to Shane who rewrites the song as a full band piece. Once it is introduced in practice we keep changing and rewriting parts until we’re happy with the product and start recording some demos of it.
5) Plans for a year from now?
Keep working hard and hopefully have some new music out for everyone!
6) First gig experience?
Our first show was in a tiny tiny room with our friends in Keep Flying. The crowd was absolutely amazing and responded so well to our music. Between the crowd surfing and people singing along it was one of the coolest experiences we’ve ever had.
7) Biggest challenge?
Balancing music with everyday life, finances, and time management is always something that is a challenge. In the end, we always seem to rise above it as best as we can.
8) What’s your dream tour to star on?
New Found Glory/The Wonder Years/State Champs/The Story So Far
9) Favourite thing about performing live?
We love being able to just be ourselves and enjoy our time on stage. Moving and jumping around and getting the crowd involved are easily some of our favorite things to do in our live performances.
10) Favourite song to play live?
‘Southbound’ or ‘Lake Zoar’ because of the way the crowd responds, and they are just fun songs to play and jump around to.
11) What inspired your most recent songs?
We were really inspired by so many of the bands that have been producing such great music in the past few years. We wanted to push ourselves to a different level and really see where we can go creatively. Our newest EP is a strong representation of what we imagine ourselves to be as a band.
12) What do you do when you’re not musically involved?
Gym, fishing, hiking (Ethan)
Writing, car enthusiast, cooking (Chuck)
Work in IT, video games, other music projects (Christine)
13) What gear do you use?
Bass: Yamaha bb424 with Peavey tour series cab/head.
Guitar: Fender Telecaster with Seymour Duncan Hot Rails, Egnater Renegade head, Avatar 212 Cab.
Drums: Old Pearl Kit, Yamaha Brass Snare, Dw 5000’s, Mix of K’s – Love my 20” Sweet K for our sound.
14) In your opinion, what’s your best song?
It’s a hard one to choose but right now probably Southbound. We’re really happy with how it turned out.
15) Pizza! What do you all eat?
Can’t go wrong with a bacon or pepperoni pie!
16) Who has the worst tattoos?
Only Chuck has tattoos, so by default he has…
17) Funniest show story?
When we last played in Albany, NY we were made aware of an angry tenant in the building above us. When we went outside we saw a man hurling his old school giant television out of his second story window landing next to Shane’s car.
18) Fast-forward to the future. You’re multi-millionaires. What do you do with the money?
Give back musically with money, time and knowledge. The music world is tough and discouraging, yet there is so much un-nurtured talent at all levels.
