Band Q&A – Modern Mimes

We spoke to ‘Modern Mimes’ who are male and female duo out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA! Modern Mimes are;

  • Adi Elcida Hernandez – Vocals/Drum Programmer
  • Ernesto Paez – Doubleneck Guitar/Bass

1) Who are your top 3 influences?

  1. Type O Negative
  2. Massive Attack
  3. Sevendust

2) How did you get your band name?

It came from a funny story from when Adi was a kid. One Halloween, all of her cousins and friends wanted to dress up like the Power Rangers. That was the trend back then. She decided she wanted to go against the trend and dressed herself as a Mime. Years later, she came up with the name ‘MODERN MIMES’.

3) How did you meet?

We met through mutual friends in high school. We were both doing music, just not together.

4) What is your song writing process?

We go about it a few different ways. A lot of times Ernesto will come up with some guitar or bass riffs, then Adi will put some melodies together. Or, sometimes Adi will be working on a melody and Ernesto chimes in with a guitar riff and then we just start building up on it.

5) What are your plans for a year from now?

Continue to tour, write music, record albums and keep working as hard as possible.

6) First gig experience?

Our first show was actually better than we expected. We had a decent crowd and the response was really good. Got to say we were pretty nervous. What followed our first show was incredible because our 2nd show ever was a huge festival on the beach here in Fort Lauderdale called The Riptide Music Festival. It was amazing.

7) Biggest challenge?

Biggest challenge so far has been trying to juggle everything we do with such little time. Shows, writing, promotion, merch, all whilst still working our day jobs.

8) Favourite thing about performing?

Getting to share our passion with those who come see us. There’s nothing better than connecting with audiences and being in that moment together.

9) Favourite song to play live?

Our favorite song to perform live is ‘Love Hate’. We usually close our set with this song and it’s basically where we let loose and go as crazy as possible. Definitely a fun jam to end our set.

10) What inspired your recent songs?

Basically our entire album ‘THE GRAY’ is inspired by the fact that we won’t get any do-overs in this life and we should strive to be the best version of ourselves, not giving in to our own vices, negativity and demons as well as not letting others drain us of our positive outlook and utmost potential.

11) What do you do when you’re not musically involved?

Work awful day jobs. Ernesto is a bartender and Adi does merchandising for retailers.

12) In your opinion, what’s your best song?

That’s a hard question to answer, but if we had to choose one, I’d have to say Love Hate. We think it’s the perfect song to explain what we’re about. It also shows our musicianship. Love Hate was one of the first songs we ever wrote and it still gives us chills every time we hear it and play it live.

13) Who has the worst dress sense?

Well Adi is a fashion guru so I’d have to say me (Ernesto). I let her dress me up.

14) Funniest show story?

I (Ernesto) admitted to the crowd on the mic that I farted 3 times during the last song…

15) Pizza! What so you have?

I (Adi) is straight up New York style plain cheese. Ernesto is all about Chicago style deep dish with all the Italian beef!

16) Who has the worst tattoo?

Definitely Adi. It’s a tattoo of a Gummi Bear. It looks like a bruise.

17) Most annoying member?

We both have our moments, that’s for sure.

18) Fast forward and you’re millionaires. What do you do with the money?

We would more than likely continue to invest in our band. Probably put a lot of it into our stage production.
