Band Q&A – Life In Idle

We caught up with Life In Idle, who are from Dayton, Ohio, USA! They’re composed of;

  • David French – Vocals/Guitar
  • Johnathon Garybush – Guitar
  • Joey Friend – Bass
  • Alex Hall – Drums

1) Who are your top 3 influences?

Some of our biggest influences include

  1. Tom Delonge of Blink 182/Boxcar Racer/AVA
  2. Panic! At The Disco
  3. 311

2) How did you get your band name?

David and Alex started out jamming Blink covers in Alex’s bedroom freshman year of high school. We went through a couple name changes and ultimately settled on ‘Life in Idle’ by the end of high school and its stuck with us ever since. We’ve played with the idea of a name change, but we really think this name is fitting to us as a band because writing this music, playing these shows, meeting new people and having these hangs are what keeps are lives going and out of idle!

3) How did you all meet?

David, Joey, and Alex were united in 1st period General Science Freshman Year of high school. Johnathon is David’s cousin and we added him to the lineup later. We all played instruments in our schools marching band so we spent a ton of forced time together.

4) What is your song writing process?

Each song comes together a little differently. As some start out just one or two lines of song lyrics we bring to one another or a riff and we will just build on that and create the idea as a whole band for the song. Other songs are written on a more individual basis and then brought to one anothers attention then to be made into a full band track.

5) What are your plans for a year from now?

A year from now we see ourselves in a much better place than we are now. We just did a total gear upgrade. To us that means we put in hard work to buy brand new state of the art gear. We have our boys at Clairvoyant Customs making us some dope amps. We just purchased our new bass amp from them and it’s absolutely phenomenal. We’ve had the guitar cab a minute. Once we get our van squared away we can see hitting the road for all kinds of sick shows and releasing all of our tunes!

6) First gig experience?

Wow we’ve play quite a few gigs now. Probably somewhere around 100 shows. We don’t plan on stopping. One of our first gigs I can remember plugging in and playing “All The Small Things” by Blink 182 at our Freshman year high school talent show. Our first paid gig was a great memory. We started taking ourselves seriously and finally booked a hometown show with one of our favorite Dayton Regional Bands, You Vs. Yesterday. It was an amazing feeling that propelled us into a lot of opportunities we have today!

7) Biggest challenge?

Our biggest challenge that we face as a band is earning a new audience! We have a very dedicated local fan base of close friends of ours and we’re from Dayton but we’ve been able to play as far out as Indianapolis, Columbus and Newport and meet some amazing new friends! Once we hit the road and get some touring under our belts we hope to have some new friends and listeners from around the world!

8) Favourite thing about performing?

Our favorite thing about performing has to be seeing all the reactions to the music we’re playing and the energy we put out. Whether it’s a smile or someone starts moshing we love and live for that feeling that transfer of raw emotion and energy from artist to audience.

9) Favourite song to perform live?

We all really like to play our song ‘State of Mind’ live because it puts us all in a good mood and it’s just an overall solid, fun and groovy mix to jam too!

10) What inspired you to these recent songs?

A lot of our more recent songs are centered around such personal topics like self-doubt, confusion, anxiety and self-sabotage but also about perseverance and having an honest relationship with the world around you, but most importantly yourself.

11) What do you do when you’re not musically involved?

Basically, we work hard so we can play harder! David, John and I (Alex) are all servers at restaurants and Joey is a stock room worker at a factory. We spend a lot of time hanging out long boarding, eating pizza and playing video games!

12) In your opinion, what’s your best song?

Probably one of our new ones. All our new music is on a whole other playing field. We did that total gear upgrade we had mentioned earlier and our sound kinda matured and took of from there. The song we are working on in the studio now set to be released next month, official date to be determined, is probably our most fresh new song. So were going with that one.

13) Who has the worst dress sense?

No offense but we’d have to go with Joe Friend on that one. Although he also gets our most improved dress sense award! The man has many great qualities as he’s our handyman, a great friend, makes a good low end for our mix, but he could use to be on MTVs ‘Made’. The balding doesn’t help. But of course we love him anyways.

14) Funniest show story?

At a hole in the wall bar in Columbus we were approached by a homeless man who swore up and down he was the frontman of American Punk band The ‘Replacements’. We figured out he was trying to finesse a cig so we gave him one and he walked off muttering some nonsense about how the radio stole his song and the bar doesn’t respect rock n roll. They paid us fine.

15) Pizza! What do you all have?

Pepperoni! Chicken Bacon BBQ! Hawaiian! Pizza is exciting!

16) Most annoying member?

Well we have this thing where we are consistently roasting our most recent addition. So It’s our 2nd guitarist John on this one. Just on principle.

17) Who has the worst tattoo?

Joe and Alex actually both are tied for worse tattoo. Joe has a blue Gyrados Pokemon on his shoulder and Alex has a Wheezing Pokemon on his arm.

18) Fast forward and you’re millionaires. What do you do with the money?

If we were millionaires a lot of it would get reinvested into what we do as a band and to continue spreading our music and message! Some would be taken to a local charity and maybe we’d adopt a band puppy or two! Oh and a new band van would be so sick!
