Band Q&A – Breaking Even

We spoke to the guys in ‘Breaking Even’ to take us through their process, and some fun light-hearted questions, based out of Sayreville, NJ, USA, Breaking Even are;

  • LJ Goity – Vocals/Guitar
  • Justin Alpert – Guitar/Vocals
  • Andrew Ruggiero – Bass
  • James Bucchieri – Drums

1) Who are your top 3 influences?

  1. Taking Back Sunday
  2. The Story So Far
  3. New Found Glory

2) How did you get your band name?

We booked our first show with no name. Then as the show got closer, the promoter wanted to make a flyer and told us we needed a name. “Breaking Even” was the first thing LJ blurted out and it’s been our name since.

3) How did you meet?

We all played in different bands so we knew of each other, but we were good all friends with a lot of the same people.

4) What is your song writing process?

Usually Justin or I (LJ) will come to practice with an idea for a song and we will all just jam on it until we are satisfied. Sometimes we will just play random stuff at practice until we all start jamming on the same thing.

5) What are your plans for a year from now?

Hopefully to have another EP or 2 out and to be playing consistent shows in our state and the states around us!

6) First gig experience?

We got on a show with a bunch of older hard rock bands before we had a name (like we were mentioning earlier!) We ended up having a lot of people come out and we had a great reaction from our crowd and the older crowd there. It was honestly the best first-gig experience we could have asked for. We had no idea what we were doing, but we went out and we played well and it worked out!

7) Biggest challenge so far?

Our biggest challenge so far has definitely been line up changes. We have had trouble in the past keeping guys who were willing to play long-term. Thankfully now we have our group figured out and we are all in it for the long haul.

8) Favourite thing about performing?

The crowd’s energy! Playing a set and the crowd having a good time and going crazy to your music; there’s no better feeling!

9) Favourite song to perform?

I think either Lavender or Narcolepsy! Both are just really fun songs to get into and jam on! They both have a certain feel to them that puts you into the mood of that song and it makes them both fun to play.

10) What inspired your recent songs?

Growing up. Losing friends. Learning to accept everything as it is. Realising that change is unavoidable.

11) What do you do when you’re not musically involved?

We work full time! LJ also acts in his free time! But most days we all just hangout.

12) In your opinion, what’s your best song?

Probably Lavender. It was a group effort and I feel like we really accomplished what we wanted in that song. We brought a lot of dynamics into it and I feel like Lavender really shows how versatile we can be as band.

13) Who has the worst dress sense?

It’s hard to say! We are all relatively unfashionable.

14) Funniest show story?

There was this one time we were playing a show in someone’s garage in PA. They tried to set it up really cool so they had a bubble machine shooting bubbles during the set. Which was cool, but it was a tile garage floor so everyone started slipping and falling all over the place. Kids trying to mosh were just knocking into everyone. We were falling as we were playing! It was insane. It got to the point where it was so slippery that we just told everyone to stand still and clap a lot if they were enjoying the show! Thankfully no one got hurt!

15) Pizza! What do you all have?

We all agree on a pie, it’s chicken bacon ranch pie. Can’t beat it.

16) Most annoying member?

Probably LJ! He calls everyone in this band at least once a day for next to no reason.

17) Who has the worst tattoo?

I’m (LJ) actually the only in the band with any tattoos! Thankfully, I’m not disappointed with any of them!

18) Fast forward and you’re millionaires. What do you do with the money?

Donate to a lot of animal charities, take care of some friends/family who’ve taken care of us, invest in Disney, and put out DOPE quality music!
