1. Who are your top 3 influences?
As a group our influences are varied. We all listen to different music so that’s a hard question. We’d say the biggest influences on the band as a whole for the sound is ‘QOTSA’, ‘Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ & earlier ‘Pvris’ stuff. But there are other influences thrown in to the sound individually too.
2. How did you come up with your band name?
When the band started we went to a cafe in London and saw that it was formally known as ‘Salvation Jane’ on a sign. We really liked it so added a ‘Y’ and there it was.
3. How did you all meet?
We all knew of each other as musicians in the South East scene. Holly and Dan started up the band after playing in a few other bands together before hand. Tor was approached by Dan who knew of her playing and had seen her live. Chess was a friend of Dan’s. And then there was Salvation Jayne.
4. What is your song writing process?
We all throw ideas around. Whether it’s demoing ideas individually, or writing together at our rehearsals. We all write lyrics and bounce off each other with the music. Sometimes we listen to music we love, current or old, and then come up with ideas that way. It’s all just fun in experimenting.
5. What are your plans for a year from now?
We have lots of stuff set for next year but don’t want to jinx anything at this stage! Touring is a must for next year! And recording more music! Just want to keep on loving what we are doing and making the most of every moment writing & performing together. Watch this space.
6. What was your first gig experience like?
Chess: Horrendous, I couldn’t control my vibrato!
Tor: I think it was a dep for a New Years Eve party with some other friends of mine. It was good if I remember correctly! It must have been cause we formed a band not long after that.
7. What has been your biggest challenge so far?
Chess: Juggling a band whilst running your own business. I’ve worked for people in the past. Not supportive for the passion I have for music and my ‘other life’ so I had to go self employed. A lot of people in the entertainment industry work day jobs. It’s a tough industry to crack.
Tor: Yeah, I’d say the admin side is more of a slog. Sitting for hours submitting your song for a tiny chance of a review and not even getting a response despite sending 50 emails is… a lot.
8. Favourite thing about performing?
Chess: The crowd bouncing back off our music. It’s a privilege to witness.
Tor: Watching reactions to our songs, especially ones people hadn’t heard before and being able to hit my snare without feeling bad for anyone’s ears.
9. Favourite song to perform?
Chess: Love performing our new song ‘Jayne Doe’ at the moment. It’s so energetic to perform you can get lost in it.
Tor: A faster song of ours that has lots of Travis Barker inspired parts as it keeps me on my toes. Violent Silence.
10. What inspired your recent songs?
Our recent songs are about various subjects. We are currently writing songs about an island off the coast of Italy called Poveglia, ex’s, ego fanatics, the beauty of being different and Coney Island. So definitely varied.
11. What do you do when you’re not musically involved?
Chess: I run with my dogs daily, chill out with my cats and run my own business. Exercise is a huge thing for me too, at least 3 times a week I’m always a part of some class or training session.
Tor: I teach drums, I practice tonnes of rudiments and play along to songs on my Instagram. I do art on my iPad and go skateboarding.
Dan: My daily life usually always revolves around music as I am a producer! When I’m not doing that, I like meeting up with friends for coffee, reading and exercising.
12. In your opinion, What’s your best song?
Chess: Too hard!
Tor: The last one we write is always the best.
Holly: I really like The Art of Falling.
Dan: Black Heart for me.
13. Who has the worst dress sense?
Chess: Probably me as I make up fashion. Love not colour coordinating.
Tor: Don’t know but it definitely is not me. Haha.
14. Funniest show story?
Holly left her suitcase in Manchester and we found out when we got to our Birmingham accommodation. We had to drive around in the early hours trying to find toiletries and underwear. And we messaged every person from the night before, photographer, promoter…. you name it! Luckily all the people on the Manchester gig were playing the same festival as us and were London bound the next day.
15. Pizza! What toppings do you have?
Tor: Pepperoni and jalapeños.
16. Who’s the most annoying?
Chess: Me. I’m the annoying orange. YouTube it lol.
Tor: Chess, she’s the annoying orange.
Dan: Chess, she’s more annoying than the annoying Orange, but that is her nickname.
17. Who has the worst tattoo?
Holly because she hasn’t got any. One of us has got a grape tattoo so that when we are 80 it will be a raisin. We’ll leave you to guess who.
18. Fast forward and you’re millionaires. What do you do with the money?
Tor: Buy the sneakers I’ve always wanted.
