2nd Suitor are a trio from New York! Consisting of;
- Tyler – Vocals/Guitar
- James – Bass
- Micah – Drums
1.Who are your top 3 influences?
I’d have to narrow it down to MXPX, Iron Chic, and Say Anything. But there’s like, a billion other influential bands, artists, and people.
2. You recently went on tour all the way to Florida (from New York), how was that experience for you?
It was amazing! It was our first time ever touring down the east coast and Florida treated us so well. We did a total of 5 shows in the state and each were fantastic.
3. How did you all meet?
We’ve all been involved in music and in local music scenes for a long time and met through playing in different bands who were playing shows together. Then I stole Micah and James from their bands and forced them to be in mine. (*insert maniacal laughter*).
4. What is your song writing process?
I typically write alone for the most part, or at least I’ll write most of a song by myself and I’ll have a vague idea of how I want everything to sound. Once I bring it to practice, these guys really bring my ideas to life and put their own stamp on the songs too. From there, we will play through songs a bunch and kind of listen for ideas and ways to make everything as tight as we can.
5. What do you hope to achieve a year from now?
One year from now we hope to be touring a lot more with some new music. We would love to be a support band on some larger shows and tours, but as long as we’re playing to anybody in any capacity, we’re having fun.
6. What was 2nd Suitor’s first gig experience like?
Our first show was an experience… My good friends Aaron and Pete from a band called ‘Above The Mendoza’ and my buddy Patrick Bayer (who recorded our first EP) came up to Binghamton, NY to play our first show ever. We rehearsed the songs for about an hour and then went and played the show.
We tried our best. Haha…We probably should have practiced for a lot more than an hour.
7. Biggest challenge so far?
Finding ways to better promote our music to new people is always a challenge. We’re constantly trying to think of ways to get people to listen or come to a show. It’s a never ending game honestly but it’s cool to look back and see progress. We’ve come a long way in a short time and have no plan on stopping.
8. What is your favourite thing about performing?
I get to do what I love most for 25 minutes. Nothing else in the universe matters when you’re performing. It’s just that moment. That short 25 minutes means so much to me every single time I’m lucky enough to get to play. I’ll never take that for granted.
9. You recently opened for William Ryan Key (of Yellowcard), how was that experience?
Amazing! We were so stoked to play a show with somebody who all of us grew up listening to. To be able to play a show with someone like that is a surreal experience.
10. What inspired your recent songs?
I think just being a 20-something year old and trying to navigate through life as best as I can. I feel like there’s a lot of confusion and emotional panic at this age. None of us really know what we’re doing or how to take care of ourselves, our relationships, our planet…
But there is still some honest hope and an optimistic outlook through these songs.
I can’t wait for everyone to hear them.
11. What do you do when you’re not musically involved?
Not much. Pretty much just work out, watch wrestling and football, and find other shows to go to.
12. Can we expect any new music soon?
YES! Hopefully this fall/winter!
13. Who has the worst dress sense?
Personally, I think all three of us look amazing in dresses.
But I’m going to go with Micah just because he wears the same gym shorts like 363 days of the year.
14. Funniest show story?
My buddy Jon from my old band was filling in on drums for a show and we were opening for a rock band in our area at a local bar. Before the show, they wanted to to a promo video for Facebook to get more people to come out. I’m not sure if many people caught it, but in the video, behind the singer of the headlining band who is holding the camera and taking the video of all of us, Jon and I started making out and James starts laughing like crazy. It was great.
15. Pizza! What do you have?
Top 3 are plain (because you HAVE to try a slice of plain to really get the vibe of the place), BBQ chicken, and breakfast pizza.
16. Who’s the most annoying?
Me. Hands down. I’m just kind of scatterbrained sometimes. I feel like I just say random stuff and hopefully someone understands what I’m trying to say.
17. Who has the worst tattoo?
Probably Micah and I’s matching Sprankles tattoo. It’s not bad. Just stupid. And I love it.
18. Fast forward and you’re millionaires. What do you do with the money?
Open a venue/skatepark/community space/indoor sports complex/wrestling arena/bowling ally/dog park! I also feel like this kind of answers question 16 too…
