Band Q&A – New Heroes

New Heroes are based in Texas! Their quintet is made up of;

  • Ryan Sword – Vocals
  • Yash Chulki – Lead Guitar
  • Nicholas Lundquist – Rhythm Guitar
  • Angel Lozano – Bass
  • Miles Mathewson – Drums

1. Who are your top 3 influences?

Ryan: The Story so far, Blink-182, Broadside
Angel: Joyce manor, tigers jaw, lo-fi anime beats to chill/study/sleep too
Nick: The Story So Far, Vincent Accardi, The Wonder Year
Yash: Ian D’sa from Billy Talent, Tom Delonge, Patrick Stump
Miles: All Time Low, Blink-182, Oh No Not Stereo

2. Where did the name ‘New Heroes’ come from?

Ryan: Me and the first guitarist we had were joking around throwing stupid names around for a metal band and we decided to be a pop punk band kind of on a whim. At first the guitarist jokingly said bubble raptor (the name of our first single) but somehow landed on new heroes.
Miles: Everyone was really young but now that I joined we’re considering changing it to Old Heroes.

3. How did you all meet?

Angel: I met Nick in high school, and through him I met the rest of the band. I was the last member to join, and I knew Nick needed a bass player. So I hit him up and met the guys.
Nick: Some of us know each other from high school, some from shows, and some from local music pages.
Yash: I met Ryan through the Defend Pop Punk Group on Facebook. I wish I had a cooler story.
Miles: I replied to a Facebook status and I tricked them into thinking I could play drums.

4. What is your song writing process?

Ryan: For Audra Lane most of the ep was written in my bedroom before the new group came together. But everyone kinda put their own twist on everything during recording and made it way better.
Nick: Our songs are usually birthed from a small idea and then everyone helps build around that. Then we tweak it until we’re happy with the outcome.
Miles: I like starting with a good guitar riff and building from that.

5. What do you hope to achieve with your EP that came out Friday?

Angel: World domination.
Yash: I hope we make music that makes people as happy as it makes us.

6. What was New Heroes first gig experience like?

Ryan: The very first one, eh. The first show since moving to Dallas was great though. Since then we’ve had endless support.
Angel: I thought my first gig with New Heroes was pretty fun. It was a house show in the middle of nowhere, but it was the first show I had played in years. I had a great time.

7. How difficult was it for the band to deal with Ryan (vocals) moving to Dallas?

Ryan: The old group wasn’t as invested in the band as I was. That was a big reason why I made the move. Now, everyone has poured every ounce we have into the band. Money, time, and dedication.

8. What is your favourite thing about performing?

Ryan: It’s like an adrenaline rush party with 4 of your best friends all doing what you love most.
Angel: There’s nothing like playing music. When you play music, everything else just goes away. All the good, all the bad. For just a moment, there is only music.
Nick: Honestly just doing it feels better than anything else in the world.
Yash: The opportunity to let loose for 30 minutes and be yourself on display in front of people who don’t know you. It’s scary but exhilarating and it’s one of my favorite things about playing music in general.
Miles: Just being able to have fun with my friends.

9. Favourite song to perform live?

Ryan: So far Gray’s because the crowd energy as well as ours is always maxed out.
Nick: Talk for sure. It seems the most dynamic to me and it just feels good.
Yash: I don’t know if I have a favourite, differentiated always seems to get people excited, which is something I’m very grateful for.
Miles: Codependent. That song is just really fun to play.

10. What inspired your recent songs?

Ryan: As far as lyrically, a combination of breakups, bad friends, awful people and people telling me how to live. I kind of just wrote down how I felt about those situations and made it rhyme.
Yash: The desire to create something positive in a crazy world. When you create something that would lift your spirits, chances are that it could lift someone else’s too and that’s something that can’t be ignored or understated.

11. What do you do when you’re not musically involved?

Ryan: Video games and working a full time job.
Angel: I’m a barista, so I spend a lot of time in coffee.
Nick: I work a lot, spend a lot of time with my lovely girlfriend, and I play a mean game of smash bros.
Yash: I’m studying computer science so that takes up most of my time other than music! I also like cooking a lot.
Miles: Ride my motorcycle.

12. In your opinion, what’s your best song?

Ryan: Either Talk or Differentiated. Talk because it’s different from the other songs lyrically. It’s more about my depressed state and how I feel when I’m there. Being at your lowest and feeling like you just annoy people when you speak. Differentiated because it’s about making your own opportunity in life even when you’re already juggling a ton of other things, making yourself the best you and living your best life.
Angel: Boombox. It has Andrew Kuehm in it.
Nick: Differentiated. It has the best structure with my favorite lyrics, it’s also the fastest!
Yash: Gray’s Sports Almanac, because I think that encapsulates our message the best.
Miles: Differentiated because the lyrics are really positive and it’s just a good message.

13. Who has the worst dress sense?

Ryan: Lol Yash. Jk probably me. I’ll walk out of the house in purple gym shorts and a blue vans shirt and think I’m fine.
Angel: You know, I was going to say Yash. But to be honest, Ryan could step it up a bit. Do you own only two t-shirts?
Nick: Yash, no hate but only because he’s color blind.
Yash: I don’t think any of us dress particularly bad, but Miles has I think 17 of the same shirt, and that’s not a joke.
Miles: Definitely me because I wear the same shirt for most of our shows.

14. Funniest show story?

Nick: For me, it was when we were getting pizza pre-show and gave Johnny Franck(formerly of Attack Attack) free tickets to our show without having any clue who he was until we had left.
Miles: One time Yash said “WELCOME TO THE BEST NIGHT OF YOUR NIGHT!”

15. Pizza! What do you all have?

Ryan: Probably just pep. It’s safe.
Angel: Pepperoni. Duhhhhh.
Nick: On my pizza I like, Alfredo sauce, black olives, chicken, garlic. Simple!
Yash: Pepperoni, spinach, and olives. The three food groups, in my opinion.
Miles: The cheapest.

16. Most annoying member?

Ryan: Everyone gets on everyone’s nerves every once in a while but that’s a family.
Angel: Angel. I hate that guy.
Nick: Oh I’m the most annoying based solely on my puns!
Yash: Miles because he has 17 of the same shirt.
Miles: Angel because he’s annoyingly cute.

17. Who has the worst tattoo?

Ryan: Probably Nick. Because he’s impulsive. But I have a magikarp on my arm so I can’t judge.
Angel: I’m sure nick has some bad ones.
Yash: Me because I’m the only one with no tattoos.

18. Fast forward and you’re millionaires, what do you do with the money?.

Ryan: I’d buy myself a dope house and car and retire.
Angel: Let my mom retire.
Yash: Buy Miles 17 more shirts.
Miles: Spend it all on gear and merch.
