Band Q&A – Sunsleep

Sunsleep are from Dallas, Texas! Their members consist of;

  • Devin Barrus- Vocals
  • Miles Croney – Guitar
  • Lance Nerio – Guitar
  • Dylan Woods – Bass
  • Mason Croney – Drums

1. Who are your top 3 influences?

  1. Pvris
  2. The 1975
  3. Anberlin

2. How did you come up with the name ‘Sunsleep’?

Not too great of a story but most of us grew up listening to Underoath and so we got the name from their song “When the Sun Sleeps” in honor of one of our favorite bands.

3. What made you guys decide to become a band? Can you describe the moment you became ‘official’?

Miles, Mason, Lance, and Dylan were once all in a old metal band together but our music taste started to change as we got older so with that, our writing style changed as well. We had a couple of demos we were writing when we ran across Devin on YouTube one night. We shot him a message, sent him the demo track now known as “Fever” and once he sent it back, that’s when we knew, we had something special.

4. What is your song writing process?

Writing together can be hard sometimes with everyone not living in the same place but we for sure make it work. We try to write any time we are all together and then when we are not Devin has his own studio where he writes and then sends over demos and Lance, Miles, and Dylan write together and send demos over as well. We got a pretty good system going if we must say so.

5. What do you hope to achieve a year from now?

We just want to continue growing and connecting with as many people as possible. This next year we hope to be back out on the road with new music and hitting new places we haven’t yet.

6. What was Sunsleep’s first gig experience like?

This ones kind of a funny story. Our first show ever as Sunsleep was at So What festival in Grand Prairie, TX. It was right after we released Fever on YouTube and knowing Devin for less than a month and him living all the way in Utah, we had a fill in vocalist (Garrett Parsa of Lost In Separation) come in and do vocals for us. It was honestly a blast of a show and because of it, Sunsleep was able to get a rocket boost off the ground. Our first, first show with Devin was a little over a month later at Tomcats West with The Word Alive. That show was also pretty significant do to us realizing that the chemistry with Devin was there and it made us even more excited for the future of Sunsleep.

7. What has been your biggest challenge so far?

One of the biggest challenges for our band is honestly just being spread apart and not all living in the same place. The majority of the band lives close by so it’s not too bad. The hardest part is really when it comes to writing, but thanks to the good ol’ internet, we are able to send demos back and forth to each other and work on music that way.

8. What is your favourite thing about performing live?

Being able to vibe and interact with everyone over something we are all passionate about together. This project is just not ours but everyone else’s as well. We take everything anyone says to us to heart and we want to make this a project everyone feels welcomed and a part of.

9. You recorded a video for ‘Drifting Away’ back in June. What was it like shooting that?

That video was honestly a blast to film! We had the pleasure of filming it with the talented and amazing Alexa San Roman who did an incredible job. Her ideas and willingness to try new things were awesome and what ended up making that video a blast to film and watch. It was a first for us to go out of state and somewhere new to film a video.

10. What inspired your upcoming songs?

We’re really striving to refine our sound from the last record. We have some ideas for the new stuff that we think everyone will enjoy, no matter what your taste in music is.

11. What do you all do when you’re not musically involved?

We all have side jobs outside of the band that we do when we are not on the road or in the studio to help fund the project. A lot of us are super into gaming whether it’s PC, PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch. Oh, we also hit up that Pokémon Go a lot as well.

12. Where would you most like to tour?

Japan, 100%!! A lot of us are super into Japanese culture and Anime, and have always wanted to visit. Also, giant Pikachus walking along the street? Sounds like paradise!

13. Who has the worst dress sense?

We feel we honestly all have a pretty good dress sense. We all kinda have the same taste except for Mason. He’s our cut off khaki shorts and pop-punk band t-shirt or pizza t-shirt kinda guy. Love you buddy!

14. Funniest show story?

One of the funniest moments we’ve had so far on stage was this one time we had pizza catered right before we played so we all stuffed our face before going on stage. Well, during the show, while Devin was singing, he spit out a piece of pizza by complete accident and a few of us saw it while playing and couldn’t help but die laughing. Later that night, our photographer that was with us actually got it on video and we watched it and couldn’t stop laughing in the van.

P.S. We are so sorry to the person that pizza may of hit! ❤

15. Pizza! What toppings do you have?

We are basic pop punk kids at heart honestly and all like pepperoni and extra cheese.

16. Who’s the most annoying member?

No one is honestly annoying per say. We all have our little things we do that might annoy one of us every now and again but no one is truly annoying.

17. Who has the worst tattoo?

Dylan does! Everyone’s tattoos are honestly super sick and all really well done except for Dylan’s knee tats. One time he got a smiley face on one knee and a frown face on the other.

18. Fast forward and you’re millionaires. What do you do with the money?

Honestly find some good charities that we truly believe in and donate to them. Some of us would also save a lot of it for our future families, kids future, or even use it to help our parents. We are truly not in it for the money or the fame. We just love all aspects of music and want nothing more than to be able to connect with people who feel the same about music as we do.
