Like Giants are from Shropshire. Their members consist of;
- Daniel Kai – Vocals
- Sam Price – Lead Guitar
- Billy Clapham – Bass
- Ben Caddy – Drums
1. Who are your top 3 influences?
That’s a difficult one! We’re all influenced by different artists and bands; ranging from ‘Bullet for my valentine’ to ‘State Champs’. Collectively when we sat down to record our EP ‘Sovereign’ (Available for download 27th September, cheeky plug), we had State Champs, Neck Deep, and Four Year Strong as a heavy influence throughout the writing process.
2. How did you get your band name?
We all like sports in the group, football to rugby, but Kai and Ben are big NFL fans, Ben suggested we go for something; “large and epic sounding, something using a word like giants”, then we thought actually “Like Giants” sounds pretty good… so that’s what we chose.
3. How did you all meet?
We’ve all hung around in social circles before, so we were friends and just decided to get ourselves together and see what happens.
4. What is your songwriting process?
We all get involved with songwriting, which helps us not write the same lines or using similar ideas, I’ll (Kai) record vocal melodies and some lyric ideas on my phone, send it in the bands WhatsApp group, (we have one just for song ideas), and then build on ideas from other people before we transfer them into the rehearsal space.
5. What do you hope to achieve a year from now?
Supporting a major band on tour, maybe heading out to Europe with some festival appearances, clearly, that’s a lot within a year, but we push as much as we can show wise, we would love to support a lot more people and have hit the 100 show mark. We’re all realising a dream the end of this month (September), supporting our childhood heroes; “Less Than Jake and Goldfinger” at the O2 Academy Birmingham on September 21st, which is mad! We can’t wait to bring our highly energetic performance to an Iconic stage like the O2 and hopefully make some friends along the way!
6. What was your first performing gig experience like?
It was actually amazing, we played the underground in Stoke-on-Trent, which we play again as part of our EP Release show on the 29th with Bronnie, Insomniacs and Headaches. The crowd were up for it, we even had Fortnite and Macarena dancing to our slowest track which was surreal.
7. Biggest challenge so far?
Currently we all still have jobs, and trying to find time to play shows and earn money to fund the band becomes a challenge, we’re all 100% committed to making music and getting across the country and at the start of a bands career, we need to be playing as many shows we can, but as I said, we’re all committed and you will be seeing us pop up in a city near you real soon!
8. What is your favorite thing about performing?
Seeing the crowd sing back lyrics you write, seeing how much a song has reflected somebody else! We’re all social when it comes to meeting and hanging out with fans at shows, we’re not a band that “hide” in a dressing room, we mingle and most the time you can find us standing next to you watching bands at our shows and enjoying a drink or even a selfie with as many people as we can.
9. Where would you most like to tour?
Collectively we all want to head to the states and Japan, Australia would be a blast as so many bands come from there and the scene over there is CRAZY right now! We have friends in bands that have played there, and they all say it’s such a vibe! Ideally, we want to play anywhere and everywhere, meet as many awesome people and places as we can! Just keep helping us promote our material and who knows, we will be right in your neighborhood soon!
10. What inspired your recent songs?
A collection of things, from relationships, bullying, anxiety to nostalgic moments with friends, We didn’t want to make a stereotypical pop-punk EP, so we have tried a few different things to spice up the tracks, with the heavy driving riffs throughout cut and run, to the jumpy element of a few of the other tracks, there’s definitely something in there for everyone.
11. What do you all do when you’re not musically involved?
Sleep! We all sleep and just wake up for shows! We all work as I mentioned before, so finding the time to balance things out in a healthy way is a little tricky. From working a full-time job to finding time for family, your own time, (setting aside time to chill is so important) it all starts to become a balancing act, but I think now, we have down to an art.
12. You have grown exposure/fans really quickly, what is that experience like for you?
It’s amazing to see so many awesome people follow us! And they’re all talented, we have some of the most talented followers, it’s so sick to see! We have spent the first couple of months playing as many shows as possible, and made some kick-ass friends along the way! We have only been a band in the public eye for 2 months, and it’s awesome to see the number of places we have played and the things we have done already. To see the engagement increase as the weeks go on is so humbling to us, we don’t take it for granted and love every effort made to help spread the word about us, So for you reading this… Thank you x
13. Who has the worst dress sense?
We all do… HAVE to say that to not cause a rift, we’re not all cut from the same cloth, so we all have different influences and fashion styles.
14. Funniest show story?
We don’t have one in particular, but we try to get along with every band that we play with, we’re quite a confident bunch and just want to have a laugh when we play shows. We are weird! like… WEIRD! And recently we played a show in Redditch for the Dementia Uk Charity, If you haven’t seen any of the Harry Potter movies, do yourself a favor and check out the Voldemort ‘HARRY POTTER IS DEAD’ scene, and listen to the laugh he does. This has VASTLY been one of the signatures for Like Giants in EVERY show we have played since our first London show back in July. So if you’re wanting a quick way to gain our attention, and to annoy Billy in the process; (he hates that scene), then just shout ‘HARRY POTTER IS DEAD’ and see what happens next.
15. Pizza! What do you all have?
Pizza, with Sam being a head chef, he can be a pain in the ass to go out for food with, if he doesn’t like something, he usually sends it back, which thinking about it, is the normal thing to do… I, however, would just put up with it, cause I hate annoying people and I’m just too nice I suppose.. aka… a sap! I don’t think we have any preference when it comes to pizza. I know a few of us DON’T like pineapple on there, I do, yes, I LOVE Pineapple on a pizza… Cheque, please!
16. Most annoying member?
Ben – cause he’s annoying haha. Ben has a way of saying things too quickly, sometimes without thinking what he’s saying, so if you can imagine a full-sentence said in 1 noise… at the same time, then yeah, that’s what it’s like to have a conversation with Ben. I’m going to regret answering this, Hi Ben, I know you’re reading this somewhere and… You’re annoying, but damn you’re beautiful.
17. Who has the worst tattoo?
Ahh… I wouldn’t call it the worst tattoo… I have a tattoo of a Unicorn, and one of our members, I won’t throw them under the bus, as their parents don’t know he has this. But one of us has a Pokemon tattooed on themselves, no it’s not something badass like Charizard, it’s instead, of a Diglett. To this day he still hasn’t told us exactly WHY he had it done, but either way, it looks SO GOOD! #noregrets
18. Fast forward and you’re millionaires. What do you do with the money?
Spend it all on POP TARTS! Those things are the SHIT! Nah but seriously, probably seeing the world, investing in houses and making sure my family were all looked after…. after buying all those essentials, like a golden toilet seat, fast cars, and a HUGE HOUSE.
Like Giants EP ‘Sovereign’ is out 27th September. It will be available on all platforms, Spotify, iTunes, Deezer etc.
