Band Q&A – Foxhound

We spoke to Foxhound! A 4-piece from Phoenix, Arizona! Members consisting of;

  • Ray Bowers
  • Abel Magana
  • Frank Rak
  • Travis Tolin
1. Who are your top 3 influences?

  1. Bayside
  2. Capstan
  3. Senses Fail

2. How did you get your band name?

We had the typical mountain of terrible ideas thrown around, and finally decided that we all like metal gear solid and thought Foxhound was a cool name. In the video game series, Foxhound is a small military team of battle-hardened veterans. In the band Foxhound, no one is tough so I’m not sure why I told you that about the game, but it is really cool. Also, the Fox and the Hound is our singer’s favourite old Disney movie so it just kind of worked.

3. What was it like shooting the video for ‘How I Got This Way’?

We rented an awesome looking old building for the shoot, but it unfortunately had no AC and we did this in the middle of the Arizona summer on a 112-degree day. It was a sweaty and tough 10-hour day, but we met some cool people and ultimately had a blast doing the shoot. Many of the ideas for the video happened on the spot and we just couldn’t stop smiling and laughing with the videographer the whole time. Really fun day.

4. What is your current song writing process?

Ray, our singer usually writes a song on guitar and brings it to the group where we reconstruct and add layers with the other instruments.

5. What do you hope to achieve a year from now?

Being one year older. Just kidding, we are currently sitting on too many song ideas and narrowing them down to shape our next EP which we hope to release next year. We also have not yet toured, and we would like to do that in any capacity. Now that we are 4 years old, we have also decided year 5 is for getting shirts made.

6. What was Foxhound’s first gig experience like?

Probably not great, we all drank right up until taking the stage and there were not a lot of people there. I’m sure we had fun though, always do.

7. Biggest challenge?

Making time for the band. We are all full-time workers with personal obligations and finding the time to get together is tough. We also suck at marketing. But probably the most difficult obstacle we have is getting those last few Pringles out of the can. Seriously, why are they packaged like that? The cans should not be that long.

8. Favourite thing about performing?

There’s this cool thing about the anxiety you feel beforehand melting away somewhere half way through the first song. The best thing though is when you can see that someone in the room is connecting with what you are playing, it’s really awesome to share that.

9. How did you all meet?

Abel and Ray were in bands together since 2007 and met through their first band and really hit it off as friends. Frank moved to Arizona in 2008 and Abel was the first friend he met. Frank was invited to join a band Abel and Ray were part of and we have just continued to make music ever since. Frank and Abel are known by friends as “Frabel” because of how weirdly close they are and it’s the purest best buds kind of relationship you could find. There is no mention here of bass players as they continue to leave us ☹

10. What inspired your ‘Overgrown’ Ep lyrically?

Much of that EP and our music in general is about seeing your flaws, how they hurt you, accepting yourself, and trying to relate to others. Emotional validation is something everybody wants to feel. Also, the first line of “Halve the heart” came about from the “friends don’t lie” theme in Stranger Things which is just such a great show. Sometimes lyrics are written beforehand, but it’s not uncommon for them to be written in the studio on vocals day. But I’d have to say that the EP was mostly inspired by Ben Affleck’s performance in the film Gigli.

11. What do you do when you’re not musically involved?

Ray is working on his bachelor’s degree, Frank plays a ton of D&D, Abel is big into photography, and all three of us work full time. When we’re together and not practicing, it’s pizza, video games, and beer.

12. Where would you most like to tour?

A tour anywhere would be awesome because of the insane number of hangs that will take place. East coast of the U.S. would be fun since we are all familiar with the western side already. And anywhere outside of the country would be all of our dreams coming true.

13. Who has the worst dress sense?

Ray does, he dresses like he gave up ten years ago and has no real plans for a future. We are always like “Hey Ray, wanna go shopping for clothes? That shirt has holes in it and we are really worried about you.” He thinks we are joking, and it’s really uncomfortable. This is our official plea to the Queer Eye team to please come help our friend.

14. Funniest show story?

We played a show with a young band touring from New Mexico and Frank wanted to show how young and cool he was in the alley and drop kicked an old door sitting near a dumpster. His foot went through, and he bled profusely even onto his bass drum during our set. Then after the show at a house party our girlfriends went with the other band and played dice for cash while we looked for them. In their defence, that band was really cool.

15. Pizza! What toppings do you have?

Frank – Pep and Pine (this means pepperoni and pineapple, he just won’t say it normal)
Abel – Pepperoni, Mushrooms, Jalapenos, extra sauce.
Ray – everything, nothing, some of the things, it’s all good.

16. Most annoying member?

Abel, he makes the worst jokes but we also love him for this.

17. Fast forward and you’re millionaires. What do you do with the money?

Abel – Spend it all on a giant ranch style house with my own wing for a recording studio and photo lab.
Frank – Fully finance a sequel to the hit 2002 classic film Kung Pow: Enter the Fist. Maybe try out Magic: The Gathering.
Ray – Probably use it to help people, or buy all the guitars.
