The Bad Bees are from Cinnaminson, NJ, USA! Their members consist of;
- Jake Barbadoro
- Brandon King
- Bryan Kelly
- John Melvin
1. Who are your top 3 influences?
- Fleet Foxes
- The Mars Volta
2. How did you get your band name?
We have always been The Bad Bees. In the earliest days of the group we were on our way to a performance. At the time we still didn’t have a name for the group and so we started firing off suggestions. Someone had weird bee paste on tattoos and I remember sticking one on my throat. Felt pretty badass. Then someone suggested the bad bees as a name and we though it had some zing to it so we went with that for the night. And it just really stuck.
3. What inspired the lyrics to ‘Always Restart?
I was in quite a rut when I came up with that one. I felt at the time I was writing what I really needed to hear.
4. What is the difference in your writing process between Always Restart and Fast Paced Space?
Fast Paced Space was really fun because I came up with the concept ahead of time then worked the lyrics around that. Always restart was more of a written response to my life at the time. An emotional snapshot in time.
5. What do you hope to achieve a year from now?
We’d love to and are planning on having more content out soon. So in a year we want to be close to that if not already have something new out to hear.
6. What was ‘The Bad Bees’s first gig experience like?
I remember playing acoustic shows at this dive bar in Philly when we first started. It was pretty much Brandon playing guitar and me singing. I never knew what to do with my hands. I think thats what made me want to play guitar so much.
7. Biggest challenge so far?
It takes a lot of effort to put together good recordings. We all work full time to support the music, so its challenging in that regard. Being able to balance your life while steadily working towards making new material. After all thats what we do, and I’d say we’re making good progress.
8. Favourite thing about performing?
I’d have to say it’s pretty satisfying when you notice yourself nailing certain parts that maybe a month or two prior you were screwing up. I’ve always enjoyed the sense of progress in my playing. The more you practice the more comfortable you are on stage so its always good to know you’re improving.
9. What has been the most surreal moment of your career so far?
We were asked to open a big concert at Festival Pier in Philadelphia for a big radio station in the city, 104.5. That was one of my favourite memories. Biggest stage we’ve played to date. It was a very cool feeling.
10. How did you all meet?
Brandon Jt and myself (Jacob) started playing music together in middle school. It was metal music and so we played together growing up all throughout highschool. Then we went our separate ways for college. Once we all started making our way back to Cinnaminson after college we started jamming together again. That was about four years ago now around 2015. And here we are!
11. What do you all do when you’re not musically involved?
We all have our day jobs and personal lives. Jt is a brewer, Bryan is a chemist, and Jake and Brandon work at a soap company. We’re are really close so whenever we have down time or go out we’re all usually together.
12. Where would you most like to perform?
We would love to play out more in New York considering how close we are. Its just something we havent really done yet. To quote Beyonce, “theres nothing you cant do!”
13. Who has the worst dress sense?
Great question I’d say its a split between Jt and Bryan. Jt usually wears something offensive and Bryan sweats a lot onstage cause he can’t not wear that kimono.
14. Funniest show story?
We did a summer tour a little while back in an old mini bus. We stuck an AC into one of the windows and foamed the hell out of it. That was probably one of the funniest things was pulling up to all these shows in this wild looking hobo bus seeing everyone’s reactions.
15. Pizza! What toppings do you have?
Chicken tenders with blue cheese and buffalo sauce.
16. Most annoying member?
Jake, singers are pre Madonna’s.
17. Who has the worst tattoo?
If by worst you mean coolest Jt has a tattoo of a pentagram on his calf that says “Kinda Rad!”
18. Fast forward and you’re millionaires. What do you do with the money?
Never stop sleeping my problems are over who gives a shit now!
